Community Projects
Warlukurlangu has often been described as being the social and cultural hub of the community. WAAA is committed to providing a safe and happy environment not only for painting but for community members to gather and socialize. The staff organize regular BBQ's, bush trips, and film nights.
Warlukurlangu also works hard to build strong relationships with all of the other community organizations including Childcare, Yuendumu School, the Mt Theo Youth Program, Council, WYNN health and the Clinic, PAW Media and the Old People's program.
The art centre also sponsors events during the famous annual Yuendumu Sports weekend.
The health programs and dog program are designed to benefit all community members not only artists. The art centre provides financial support for 'sorry camps' and annually during ceremony time. Apart from money we provide feathers, ochres and other ceremony items.
The art centre is currently funding the Yuendumu School breakfast program after they run out of funding.
The art centre has also been actively involved in fundraising for the pool which will hopefully be built very soon. We have donated funds towards the building costs and have committed to helping to pay for the ongoing maintenance costs.
In September 2007 the owners of KORIMCO, a Melbourne based soft toy company, visited the art centre to buy some art. They also brought with them a selection of gorgeous soft toys which they donated to the local childcare "Kurdu Kurdu Kurlangu'. We are also very grateful that KORIMCO have generously donated another 60 toys to the childcare for presents for the children for Christmas 2007.
The art centre also recently teamed up with PAW media to fund the re-opening of a community computer room which has recently been defunded. The computer room allows locals to do internet banking, use the web, burn CD's etc. The art centre will provide funds for a part time computer room supervisor, PAW Media will oversee the running of the computer room.
