Health Programs

As part of its care for its members Warlukurlangu has organised for artists to receive specialist medical care otherwise not available in remote Central Australia.

In 2005 and 2006, with the generous assistance of the Canberra Medical Society, groups of artists travelled to Canberra for cataract operatons.

While in the city the artists and their families enjoy all the things a big city has to offer, like shopping! The operations were all successful and more are planned for 2007.

Warlukurlangu with the assistance of the Canberra Medical Society has also organised for a number of artists to travel interstate for other urgent specialised medical care.

All of these projects would not have been possible without the generous support of Alcon and Bausch and Lomb who donated the lenses for the cataract operations as well as ActewAGL, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Newmont Mining, Griffith Art Framing and a large number of individual Canberrians and other donors.

The art centre is also very proud to have been able to support the Canberra Medical Society and WYNN Health to travel to Tennant Creek in July 2007 to operate on 20 Warlpiri children who had raptured ear drums due to chronic, recurring ear infections. After undergoing surgery the kids went on a road trip for one week to Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock accompanied by a WYNN Health nurse who checked their ears daily. Lots of fun activities were organised to keep them entertained including a trip down a mine and a camel ride.

Newmont Mines once again generously donated funds to help to pay to entertain the kids after the operation, Alcon Laboraties also donated much needed funds. Voyages Hotels provided free accomodation at Kings Canyon resort and Dr Chapman and Dr French both donated their services.
