New Art Centre

From its humble beginnings in the Adult Education Building in Yuendumu in 1985, the Warlukurlangu art centre has changed location several times, moving to a small building on the current site in 1991. However, by 2004 the number of member artists of Warlukurlangu had increased dramatically and, with termites well established, something needed to be done.

After much consultation with the artists plans were drawn up by the Centre for Appropriate Technology in Alice Springs to renovate and extend the existing building, ensuring that the beautiful facade of the building was retained. With the assistance of the Federal Government and with a generous donation from Newmont Mining and with the artists matching all contributions dollar for dollar, a purpose built art centre was made possible.

The new art centre was officially opened at the 2005 Open Day. Many of the founding artists spoke and danced on the day; everyone was very proud and happy.
