Open Day

In October 2005 Warlukurlangu Artists celebrated 20 years of working as a successful indigenous owned and operated art centre in the remote central desert of Australia. It is one of the oldest continuously operating art centres in this region. This event coincided with the completion of a new art centre building.

In order to celebrate these two events the artists wanted to hold a big party at the art centre and invite everyone who has supported the artists and their work during the last 20 years. As well as inviting people from all over Australia and abroad, the artists wanted to have a big celebration, and so the Yuendumu Community Festival was organised to mark the event.

Despite huge amounts of rain the week before, several hundred visitors braved the officially closed Tanami Road to attend. It was a wonderfully successful weekend; a film night was enjoyed, people ate a lot of food, everyone enjoyed the traditional dancing, and the bands played and the children danced into the wee hours of the morning.

A follow up event is planned for the same time in 2007.
